SRF/MRF chain

SRF/MRF chain

Located in Cavallermaggiore, in the province of Cuneo, Biopoplar supports farmers and investors in all the steps of the biomass production chain, starting with the definition of a detailed crop planning programme aimed at obtaining a high-quality, environmentally sustainable end product.

Only in this way can the supply chain be efficient and profitable for all operators involved.

SRF model

Our company, Biopoplar, adopts the SRF/MRF chain. The first model involves a two-year shift with these characteristics:

  • single row;
  • sixth 3.00 x 0.50 m;
  • planting material with 20 cm cuttings;
  • density of 6,600 cuttings per hectare.

This cultivation method consists of a succession of seven two-year rotations over 14 years and makes the most of the strong rooting capacity of the selected species.

TWO-YEAR SHIFT ADVANTAGES

  • Simplified mechanisation
  • Lower harvesting costs
  • Short-term income
  • SRF/MRF cultivation

MRF model

The second SRF/MRF supply chain model adopted by Biopoplar involves a five-year shift characterised by:

  • single row;
  • sixth 3.00 x 2.00 m;
  • planting material with 1-year-old rods;
  • density of 1,600 shoots per hectare.

Cultivation is divided into two five-year rotations over a ten-year period, which tends to defer the strong rooting capacity of the species.

FIVE-YEAR SHIFT ADVANTAGES

  • Superior wood chip quality
  • Higher productions
  • Differentiated market outlets

Harvesting and delivery

The wood product is harvested at the end of each shift with the help of chipping machines, which jointly perform the cutting and chipping directly in the field. The wood chips are then transported to the utilisation plant for energy production in various forms.

Supply chain logistics

The creation of a real supply chain for the production and delivery of the product to the territory is the basic prerequisite for the spread of agro-energy crops.

The structuring of the supply chain affects costs on the one hand and market prices on the other, in an interdependent manner.

The supply chain consists of the following phases/stages:

  • The feasibility study is the first step in the process and is aimed at assessing all aspects in advance and indicating the best logistical and agronomic hypotheses for plots located in a given geographical position and a given environment.
  • The cultivation of suitable areas on a circumscribed territory.
  • The management of the plots according to a cultivation plan with a small number of interventions.
  • The harvesting using competitive methods to deliver the wood chips by the supply plans of the utilisation stations.

Biopoplar is structured to support farmers/investors at all stages to ensure that the supply chain is efficient and profitable for all players.
